“Back-to-School” Reading List for Marketers

The back-to-school season is a good reminder that we’re never too old to learn something new. Here’s a list of books for marketers that are worth checking out:
1) Delivering Happiness by Tony Hseih of Zappos. I’ve blogged about this book before but it was my favorite read of the summer. It’s highly entertaining and businesses of all shapes and sizes can learn a lesson or two about how to improve their corporate culture.
2) Tell Your Clients Where to Go by Todd Sebastian. I recently met Todd and attended one his branding workshops. He’s a former executive of Procter & Gamble and dunnhumby who now focuses on helping agencies and clients improve their relationships.
3) The Power of Loyalty by Roger Brooks. You can read our full book review HERE but this a very basic book about loyalty marketing that includes lots of case studies, including one from our client at AIR MILES.
4) The Hamster Revolution: How to Manage Your Email Before it Manages You is an oldie but a goodie. In fact, I’ve got my team at JZMcBride and Associates reading it now. When you consider the sheer volume of information that each of us has to process on a daily basis, the tips in this book about how to reduce email volume, improve email quality use subject lines effectively and file emails for easy retrieval are invaluable. Plus you can read the whole book in under two hours.
5) Six Pixels of Separation by Mitch Joel and Trust Agents by Chris Brogan are both great books about effectively using social media. I also follow both of their blogs (you can sign up to have their blog posts emailed to you) and I find them to be a continuous source of valuable insight and information.
And finally, for personal growth, NPR recently ran a piece on “Three Books for Self-Help Skeptics” where they recommended:
- The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom
- Clear Your Clutter with Feng Shui
- Positive Energy: 10 Extraordinary Prescriptions for Transforming Fatigue, Stress and Fear into Vibrance, Strength and Love
What have you been reading this summer? I welcome your comments and suggestions.
